Babbling Brooks.
These pen and ink drawings aim to help people engage with the beauty of the chalk streams of the Chiltern Hills. Despite being a nature-lover, I do not claim to be an expert on this environment, and learnt a huge amount about this hidden habitat in order to put together this collection.
Chalk Streams are a globally rare habitat, home to some of the UK’s most threatened species. Over 75% of the world’s chalk streams are in England thanks to the unique geology and climate we have in our local landscape and I am lucky enough to have these beautiful streams trickling through the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire countryside around me. It’s easy to take these streams for granted, with their meandering crystal clear waters and emerald green plants, but more than three-quarters are not meeting conservation targets which is putting wildlife (and our drinking water) at risk.
It is vital that we value our chalk streams again and understand their huge importance to the local ecosystem, our health and the economy. I hope this botanical art will help people feel motivated to protect our vulnerable chalk streams.
